UQ Biotechnology Program

What is biotechnology?

Literally it is technology that utilises living things as scientific tools to make a product or to solve problems.

The Egyptians were already using biotechnology in 4000 BC when they used yeasts to make bread and wine. However the term "biotechnology" actually came about in 1917 referring to the use of large scale fermentation production.

Today "biotechnology" is used not only in reference to fermentation technology, but to any technology which has a basis in biological knowledge. All of that biological knowledge comes from many years of research that was done purely in the name of scientific knowledge.

Biotechnology is using information about biological systems to develop techniques for commercial production of food, pharmaceuticals, environmental protection, biochemicals and clinical assays.

Employment opportunities:
There are more than 400 core biotechnology companies in Australia and more than 600 medical device companies, so there are many employment opportunites. Recent UQ Bachelor of Biotechnology or Master of biotechnology graduates have been employed by IP Australia, UNISEED, Uniquest, Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations, Panbio Ltd, Ausindustry, Department of Primary Industry, Biochip Innovations, Impedimed, Mater Medical Research Institute, Institute for Molecular Bioscience, Alchemia and many other companies or institutes. Other students are continuing study towards a PhD or Professional Doctorate.

Frontiers in Biotechnology These seminars on many different fields of biotechnology (from plant biotech to nanotech) will commenced again in semester 2, Fridays 1PM as part of introduction to biotechnology, BIOT2002 and BIOT6006. Students from first year bachelor of biotechnology are also invited to attend.
